# - 303 Mexican coconut geode size 1 (un-broken)
Mexican coconuts are widely considered the highest quality geodes in the world, and are prized for the wide variety of minerals they can contain, some of which can be fluorescent. These geodes were formed by a volcanic eruption and are only found in one small area in Mexico. These geodes have all been sorted to guarantee they are hollow with crystals inside. Hollow Mexican coconuts, like these, are difficult to source since 85% of them are solid agate.
Since Mexican coconuts can potentially contain so many minerals, it is a complete surprise what wonders await inside each of these geodes. The minerals you are most likely to discover inside these geodes are:
- Quartz – Including clear quartz, amethyst and smoky quartz. May be in the chalcedony rim, as a distinct band of crystals around the cavity, as a drusy layer, or as an over-growth on other minerals.
- Calcite – In various crystal structures, including psuedocubic, dogtooth, nailhead, rhombic, and flat sheets. Is sometimes fluorescent under UV light.
- Chalcedony – Often in the rim of the geodes, can have excellent banding, sometimes fluorescent under UV light.
- Siderite – Can form the rim, and be present in the geode cavity.
- Goethite – Appears as small black needles with chisel-like terminations.
- Hematite – Appears as small, black, brown, or red spheres sometimes on or included in quartz.
- Mordenite – forms a mat of white fibers and may fill the geode cavity.
- Selenite - This crystal form of gypsum may appear as small clear tabular crystals.
- Pyrolusite - This manganese oxide forms dendritic crystals that can grow around, and on, quartz and calcite crystals.
- Ramsdellite - This manganese oxide forms small black crystal groups with needle-like crystal terminations.
- Todorokite - forms black mats of fibrous crystals.
These geodes are whole and unopened, so no one has ever seen the crystals inside. The photographs of open geodes are examples only to indicate how the geodes may look once opened.
When purchasing a geode, you have three options:
1.) We can send your geode whole and unbroken so you can open it yourself. (Methods include lapidary saws and picks/hammers.)
2.) We can split your geode open with our geode cracker, or slice it open with a diamond lapidary saw (free of charge), before shipping it to you.
3.) Or, visit us in store in Brisbane, and we can split your geode open with you!
When you order an unopened geode, we will select one for you, it may look slightly different to the example pictures here. If you would prefer to select your own geode, please contact us and we can provide a picture of our current stock for you to select from. Or, if you are local to Brisbane, you can always visit in store to choose for yourself from our full range.
